lounge chair
Inspired by my heritage and love for Scandinavian design, this lounge chair revolves around the ideal sit. Working with a traditional Danish weaving technique allows the seat to retain a comfortable recline. Joinery was a major focus in this design, using mortise and tenon and lap joints for the overall construction, which create strong connection points. The final piece is built in cherry wood and natural Danish cording.
Building a chair buck was essential in finding a comfortable sit. This tool allows for adjusting the height, depth, and angle of the seat and back. Another vital detail was the curved back and arms and determining the ideal point of contact on the back.
From the inital prototype I was able to make adjustments to the leg/seat connection and back/arm shape. Shifting the back legs in, towards each other allows a slight taper to the seat and creates a compound angle for the side rails. Using the CNC machine to cut the back/arm silhouette I was then able to hand carve and shape this piece to contour to the body's contact points of the mid-back and hands.
With this project it was important to uphold the craftmanship often found in classic Scandinavian design. Sculpting and finishing the frame by hand as well as hand weaving the seat sets this chair apart from similar chairs that are mass-produced.
