bentwood bench
The bench is constructed using molded plywood, and the repetition of shape is apparent in the three main sections of the design. Creating a seat for two people to converse, the bench is flanked by tables and hanging planters. The nylon webbing is woven in a traditional basket weave offering a comfortable sit. 60”w x 21" d x 60”h.
I could visualize the overall form from the cardboard scale model while solidifying the measurements. Using a mold built from pink foam, I was able to vacuum form the thin sheets of plywood into an oversized U shape for the frame. Allowing the layered edges of plywood to be exposed accentuates the linear curves.
The lap joints create a semi-seamless connection between the molded plywood and its counterparts. The exposed hardware are purposely placed in a diagonal configuration as a playful detail.
